Jobs and the data center in The Dalles

The Dalles has been home to a large data center since 2006. This page sticks to public counts and statements.

What the Census counts

Census ZIP Code Business Patterns for 2023 count 624 business establishments with paid employees in ZIP code 97058, with 7,145 paid employees. The ZIP code reaches beyond the city limit, so this is not a count for the city alone, and it leaves out businesses with no paid employees. For comparison, ZIP code 97031 around Hood River counts 971 establishments.

The data center

Google's public data center page for The Dalles says it began building and operating its own data centers in 2006, "and it all began here in The Dalles, Oregon." Its timeline lists the first data center opening in The Dalles and a fourth data center being built in 2015. The page says Google has invested more than $7 billion in Oregon since 2006. That figure covers the whole state, not just The Dalles, and the page gives no job count for The Dalles.

The City of The Dalles website lists tax abatement agreements for Google data centers under its business pages. For the terms of those agreements, read the city's documents. For current employment figures, use the Oregon Employment Department's QualityInfo site. We do not report job numbers here because we did not confirm a current official figure.
